How to knit a Christmas Tree Ornament

Nov. 10, 2024

In this tutorial I am going to teach you step by step how to knit this sweet little Christmas tree ornament. The holidays are such a special time of the year and I love taking the time to craft my own decorations. This is a simple and quick tutorial and I have a knit along video to help you along the way. These cute little trees make fun and quick gifts. I also like to attach to larger presents for an added special touch! Grab your needles and lets get started!

Materials:

  • Medium Worsted weight yarn I used Malabrigo Rios in VAA but you can use any brand/color
  • 4.0mm DPN’s or straight knitting needles
  • Polyfill/stuffing
  • Cinnamon stick or twig
  • Hot Glue Gun

Abbrviations:

K- Knit

KFB- Knit through the front and back loop of the same stitch

K2TOG– Knit two stitches together

CO– Cast On

DPN’S– Double pointed needles

RS– Right Side of your work

WS– Wrong Side of your work

Using 4.5mm DPN’s or straight knitting needles CO 12 sts using the picot cast on method (see video for additional help). The picot cast on will give you the frilly look at the bottom of your tree. If you don’t want to use the picot cast on no worries! Simply cast on 12 stitches with your preferred method and continue following the instructions.

This is important! Before we begin the base of our tree we will be knitting a set up row in order to increase the number of stitches to 23. You will knit the first stitch and then knit front and back (KFB) into the remaining 11 stitches. Set up row: K1, *KFB*

You can make a single tree if you want a flat ornament. If you want to make a stuffed ornament make two trees and assemble. Check out the full length knit along to see how I assemble my trees! These are quick, easy and there is plenty of room for creative liberties. I like to stuff my trees with poly fill and use a cinnamon stick for the base of my tree but you can use whatever you like! Yarn scraps also make a great suffing!
