Have you ever come across a pattern that calls for a yarn over (YO) prior to working a Purl stitch? I definitely have and instructions weren’t always clear on how to do so. This was very frustrating for me when I was a beginner knitter. Even seasoned knitters might encounter this problem if they are unfamiliar with working yarn overs.
Typically, when you work a yarn over, you bring your working yarn to the front of your work before working the next stitch. This is great of course, when the next stitch you work on is a knit stitch (as it typically is). But what do you do if your pattern calls for a YO before working a Purl Stitch?
This is when knowing the yarn round needle or YRN technique comes in handy. When you work a YRN you bring the working yarn to the front of your work and wrap the yarn around your right hand needle counter clockwise. Then, bring the working yarn back to the front of your work and work the next stitch.
This technique will enable you to create a yarn over and purl the next stitch.
